We are a group of soccer moms, PTA moms, teacher moms, homeschool moms we're young moms, expectant moms, a-bit-older moms, been-there-done-that moms we are tall, short, thin, not-so-thin but we all love chocolate and we are passionately opposed to casinos! Most of all, we are a growing group of moms who are stepping up to the plate to defend our children and protect their future. Unlike the pro-casino activists, we have not a penny to gain from this venture. On the contrary, we are pooling our resources to get the message out that gambling is bad for kids, bad for families and bad for communities. We do this for our kids. We do it for yours. We are on a mission to educate the public about the specific and irreversible problems that gambling has wrought on communities just like ours. We are committed to exposing the secrets that gambling proponents hope to keep hidden. They have hundreds of thousands of dollars at their disposal and we have pennies in comparison, but we have something they don't - moms who are concerned about their kids. And everyone knows better than to get between a mama bear and her cubs In order to fully assess the impact that a casino would have on a great place like Wichita, you can't just recruit a select group of "witnesses" and present a report for the purpose of impressing the hearers. You have to look long and hard at the facts and determine the extent of the risk. The American Cancer Society would never enlist a select group of long-term smokers who have never suffered from emphysema or lung cancer to share a glowing report of how smoking has benefited them. That would be ridiculous! They would wisely explore the whole issue and would be compelled to present the inherent risks of smoking and its harmful effects - not just on the smoker, but on those who are exposed to second-hand smoke as well. In the same way, it is only fair to expose the reality of what gambling does to families and communities. Even as "big wins" are publicly broadcasted, we seldom see the devastation of individuals and families that lie in their wake. Moms Against Casinos is dedicated to telling that truth. There are a lot of conflicting messages being propagated and it can be frustrating to know which ones to believe. We understand!
